Future course: set

When the dude is 17 and we look back to see how he got to that point, last night will be a clear signal.

He asked me to read him articles about star formation and the evolution of human hairlessness from Scientific American. He particularly didn’t want me to paraphrase, but to read him the article. Which I did (with lots of parenthetical asides).

So the future course of his life is pretty clearly set.

What is not at all clear is what that course is. Will he be heading towards a career as a research scientist, perhaps in one of the biosciences? Or will he rebel and be an abstract artist, last night being a sign of his parents' subconscious pressure towards the left side of his brain? Only time will tell.
